I am in the process of having built/building an internal roll cage for my Taco with the help of Infamous Metal Works.  Now before you look at the pictures and send me emails commenting on my A-pillars, let me tell you about the design intent and my wheeling style.

Design Intent:

bulletI am 6'4" tall.  I needed a cage that allowed me significant headroom.  I needed a cage that allowed me to get in and out of the truck without turning myself into a pretzel first.  This means that the top is not supported with a true cornered X structure for sheer strength.  It also means that the footing on the A-pillars is weaker than what I might have hoped for.  Additionally, with a double-cab, there is an issue with how to properly brace the B-pillar hoop.  How to make an X in the B-pillar and still have functional seats that recline.  All of these considerations went into the design and while I know it is likely not capable of taking a full end over end flop backward, I also know that it does add some strength for the type of roll-over that I am likely to experience with my style of wheeling.  That is a fairly slow rollover onto some rocks or down a small ledge.

Wheeling Style:

bulletMy wheeling style is quite tame.  I take obstacles slowly and never go first.  I carefully plan my route and ask for help when I am even slightly in trouble.  I have a tip-o-meter in my cab that I never allow to go over 35°.  While I go on trails like the Rubicon and out to Moab, I never go on something that I didn't see someone do before me and if it makes me slightly paranoid, I take the bypass.  I don't like feeling all shaky and jacked up with fear.  All that said, I have progressed in my wheeling aggressiveness over the years and built up to trails like the Rubicon and I will probably continue to progress the longer I wheel.  Which is why I made this cage modular.  I placed tube clamps throughout for removability as well as for flexibility in design.  If in the future I feel that my aggressiveness is getting more than the cage will take, I will remove the front A-pillars and re-design them to make them stronger.  In the meantime, the design will be what it will be.
